It’s The Final Countdown

I feel like I’m going to throw up. I no longer simply want my team to win tomorrow……I need it. Two weeks ago I expended so much energy deluding myself into thinking I would be fine with any outcome…..after all, it has been a great season. But things have changed. Now, twice as much energy is going into the effort to convince myself that a win is inevitable. Losing is not an option. And in all of this, I fully recognize the lack of wisdom in investing so much emotion into a pursuit over which I have no control. This is a decent definition of insanity. It is truly fanatical.

Tomorrow my Patriots will take the field against the New York Giants. They’ll be led by a head coach I love, and a QB who is among the best to ever play the position (although seeing him in a Yankees hat and Uggs boots makes him a bit hard to identify with at times). There are so many story lines here, all of which have been fully explored this past week. To delve into them again would only be repetitive. When you turn on the NFL Network and see a Madonna press conference, it is official…….all possible story lines have been exhausted. This isn’t about the game. It is about me.

The big challenge is, of course, my living in New York. I think if I lived in Des Moines, or Portland, or even Boston, I wouldn’t need the win. People in Des Moines don’t do the Victor Cruz dance. At least I hope not. But if my Patriots lose………..my quality of life will deteriorate. Do I hate the Giants? No. But do I want to walk into work on Monday morning, only to see my security guard salsa dancing in an Eli jersey? Ummm…….. And from there; the comparisons, the bravado, the keen analysis, the use of the word elite, and the emails, and the texts. My god, this will not do. A win is the only option.

As my pathetic Patriots evolved into a powerhouse, I found myself happy that they won a Superbowl. I was satisfied. And then two more, and then a shot at another. I was almost feeling greedy by hoping for more. But I’m no longer satisfied. I’ve morphed into the Gordon Gecko of football fans. I’d like to say I’ll enjoy the game tomorrow, but this has become highly unlikely. I have an agenda, no control, and a powerful need. There is only one option.

I feel like I’m going to throw up.

We hold a monthly charity concert at Paulie’s in Pleasantville on the second Friday of the month. Our next show is Feb 10th with Black Taxi and the lovely Victoria Herrmann opening. Yes that is one brilliant double bill.

Charity Concert Feb 10th with Black Taxi

If I may be so bold as to steal a line from my friend as he described Black Taxi. “This band is so good that if you don’t have plans I’ll see you at the concert and if you do have plans – cancel them and I’ll see you at the concert”. I think what he is trying to say and what I am saying is DON’T MISS THIS SHOW.

Two things. They just sold out the Bowery and it’s a CD release party for their new CD “We Don’t Know Any Better”. The first 50 people through the door get Black Taxi’s new CD with their ticket. Show up early and bring your punk rock party dancing shoes.

It’s a monthly concert series to raise money and awareness for two great Westchester charities, Gilda’s Club of Westchester and The Greyston Foundation. The concerts are held at Paulie’s at 14 Marble Ave in Pleasantville NY.

Steven Tyler Helps The Terrorists

Yesterday before the game between the Patriots and Ravens Steven Tyler sent the entire nation into a tizzy. What was Steven Tyler’s crime against the country? He sang the national anthem. The problem people really had was that Steven Tyler sang the national anthem like well Steven Tyler. How dare Steven Tyler sound like Steven Tyler when singing the anthem. Apparently it doesn’t take much to disrespect the United States anymore. I guess everyone’s supposed to know that you’re only allowed to sing the national anthem if you sing it well. Also you have to sing it a certain way otherwise you might as well burn the flag and blow up a building in the name of Allah. Steven Tyler’s rendition of the anthem on Sunday not only disrespected the our country but I think it may have even helped the Al Qaeda regroup and form some new training camps. In all seriousness Steven Tyler’s performance wasn’t disrespectful in fact it wasn’t even bad. I thought it was a pretty decent version. It seems out country however continues on it’s spiral into craziness. If you were insulted by Steven Tyler’s performance do us all a favor and move to Canada. I hear in Canada they start every morning with the Canadian national anthem sung by the greatest singer in the world Celine Dion. They also have less strict gun laws in Canada so you can shoot yourself in the head after the first week of listening to that. In closing I say Steven Tyler sing on. In fact sing with me, sing for the years. Sing not only for the laughter but sing for the tears. Sing with me Steven but just for today. Hey that sounds pretty good I should write that down and make a song out of it.

Joe Paterno (1926-2012)

The news has just come out that Joe Paterno has died at the age of 85. One could say a broken heart was the cause of death, though the lung cancer that he was diagnosed with will likely be on the death certificate.

How to deal with his legacy? It’s too soon, of course. Time is the great equalizer and the ultimate judge, so we will see how history treats him. The numbers are all there: 409 wins, two national championships, countless players moved onto the NFL (perhaps over 350), a great graduation rate, and so on. He held more power in Pennsylvania than virtually anyone at one time. He earned the respect that he was given.

As a young man who grew up liking Pitt (because of a quarterback I watched on Saturday’s named Marino), I was hardly a JoePa fan. Or a Penn State fan. There seemed something so deeply sanctimonious about the whole thing, and JoePa represented that for me. Yet one had to respect what they built there.

Then it all came crashing down. Jerry Sandusky has become synonymous with evil, with Paterno had moved from being a cantankerous old coach who wanted everyone to get off of his lawn (albeit his lawn being Beaver Stadium) to being a forgetful old fool. A fool who allowed Sandusky’s crimes to go unpunished for years.

Paterno’s end at Penn State clearly hurt him. It should have, since he turned his back on a very bad situation. That clearly tarnished that legacy that we discussed above. Only time will tell how it develops. With the word of his passing, I find myself torn. Certainly I’m thinking of the news of the past few months and just how bad he looked for his handling of Sandusky. Yet I find I’m thinking about him and the Nittany Lions beating Miami in the Fiesta Bowl in 1987, and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl in 1983 – his two national championships.

I find I’m thinking of the man. The good, of which there was plenty. The football, which there was 46 years of as a head coach. I’m also thinking of the bad. Today I think we mourn, as we should. It shouldn’t have ended like this, yet he has himself to blame for that. As such, we should continue to think of the victims.

The way we (the media) handled his passing – beginning with the false news last night – was bad, but not unexpected in this era. It reminded me that, generally speaking, wait until the AP reports it. They waited and didn’t report the erroneous report. To their credit, neither did ESPN.

All of that adds a final, slightly ugly chapter to Paterno’s life.

Something about that, rightly or wrongly, seems almost fitting.
