Let us begin NEXT week 784 with Modest Mouse. The Golden Casket heralds another new chapter in the Modest Mouse’s unpredictable evolution. Produced with Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee in Los Angeles and in Modest Mouse’s studio in Portland, the album hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science. Frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. “The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.” First new album in six years for Modest Mouse. A great welcome back.

The Go-Go’s returned with their first studio album since 1984’s Talk ShowGod Bless The Go-Go’s. Now, 20 years later, that album is being pressed to vinyl for the first time.  And it’s also getting two bonus tracks: “I Think I Need Sleep” and “King of Confusion.” The Go-Go’s are also releasing a limited edition blue vinyl.

Health and Nine Inch Nails are next on NEXT. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross simply have the range: Their skillset is so strong that they’re able to pivot from an Oscar-winning score for something as life-affirming as Pixar’s Soul back to the grittiness that propelled them to fame as a band in the first place. If we must live in this broken world, let us have, at the very least, some damn good tunes to listen to while we wallow in our dystopian fate. HEALTH and Nine Inch Nails have always provided the soundtrack for this specific kind of catharsis: a track that feels claustrophobic until it feels like a release. Perhaps best of all, when asked about the song, the members of HEALTH only had the following to say: “It’s fucking Nine Inch Nails. That speaks for itself. You don’t need a clever quote to encapsulate it.” NIN on tour with The Pixies opening.

Lucy Dacus has announced details for her forthcoming third album – ‘Home Video’. The follow-up to 2018’s ‘Historian’ and 2016 debut ‘No Burden’, ‘Home Video’ also features her two boy genius bandmates Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker – who contribute vocals to two tracks. Speaking about new song ‘Home Video’, Dacus explains: I thought I was writing ‘Hot & Heavy’ about an old friend, but I realized along the way that it was just about me outgrowing past versions of myself. So much of life is submitting to change and saying goodbye even if you don’t want to. Now whenever I go to places that used to be significant to me, it feels like trespassing the past. I know that the teen version of me wouldn’t approve of me now, and that’s embarrassing and a little bit heartbreaking, even if I know intellectually that I like my life and who I am.

The Glorious Sons give us a Live Rolling Stones Cover. The Glorious Sons are blue-collar poets and shitkicking rockers for the new age. It’s a live song and, yes, live music will be back soon. #LiveMusicIsGoodForYourSoul Many years ago, the Glorious Sons made the decision to not sound like a band from the 1970s. From their beloved home town of Kingston on the north shore of Lake Ontario, The Glorious Sons watched as countless young bands got their retro, Deep Purple groove on, and so resolved to give their own music a 21st century heartbeat. Mission accomplished. singer Brett Emmons of The Glorious Sons loves the Classic rock sound and —> “For me the rock genre needs to talk about now and exploit some of the stuff they didn’t have in the seventies. Modern tech can really break a song wide open, you can let your imagination run wild and be free.” 

Phil Johnson And Roadside Attraction with a cover? of All We Need Is Love. Well – it’s a cover and a comedy send up.  The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee has  33 songs in 17 minutes! A huge collection of short-form funny songs that you can listen to in the span of a bathroom break! Pirates, beach adventures, squirrels, dragons, and so much more!

I drank a liter of tequila in my bedroom, it’s taking every ounce of power not to text you. K.Flay has no qualms about being frank. On “Four Letter Words” – K.Flay (Kristine Flaherty) hits her breaking point, expletives and all. K Flay: “So often we keep everything bottled up. “Inside Voices” was a way for me to exorcise some demons and safely express these uncomfortable but very human emotions I was feeling.” Sharing a piece of her mind, in so many words, “Four Letter Words” explores the fine line of being polite and letting it all out. K Flay: “It’s petulant, on some level to go up to someone and just say, ‘Hey, you know what, fuck you. There’s something so childish about it, but there are moments when you cannot hold those feelings in. You need that relief, that catharsis, and sometimes it comes out in an immature way. I’m usually pretty mild mannered, and I try to be measured and tempered in my life and in my response to things, but I am also an animal.”

THE BEACHES ARE BACK WITH A ROWDY NEW TUNE. The catchy tune revolves around distorted guitar riffs and a killer drum line, as Jordan Miller’s throaty vocals take the lead, delivering catchy lines like, “Lame/ I wanna l-l-l-l-look at you/ Lame/ Don’t wanna t-t-t-t-talk to you/ Lame/ I know exactly what I want from you/ You’re alright, you’re alright.”” The Beaches, an ass-kicking all-girl rock band from Toronto. The quartet — comprised of sisters Kylie Miller on lead guitar and Jordan Miller on lead vocals, with Leandra Earl on guitar and keys and Eliza Enman McDaniel on drums

Tom Petty’s ‘Finding Wildflowers (Alternate Versions)’ is now available. You can also get it on a limited-edition gold vinyl. The collection of alternative versions of some of Petty’s most beloved songs first appeared on the 2020 collection â€˜Wildflowers & All The Rest’, an expansive retrospective of 1994’s ‘Wildflowers’, which was produced by Rick Rubin. Made up of 16 alternate takes, long cuts, and jam versions that didn’t make it on the original LP, ‘Finding Wildflowers (Alternate Versions)’ also includes the 1992 track ‘You Saw Me Comin”, which had been unreleased until the release of ‘Wildflowers & All the Rest’.

Josiah And The Bonnevilles. Yes, they are named after the car. Where’d you come up with the name, “The Bonnevilles”? Josiah: I would show you a photo if I had one. I had this Pontiac Bonneville that I had right before I left Tennessee in like 2008. I beat the shit out of this car–we drove it back and forth all the time, until it died. So Steve came up with the name–it ‘s a way for the car to live forever. Rising indie-folk band Josiah & The Bonnevilles possesses a special gift. With their classic sound and honest lyrics, Josiah and The Bonnevilles effortlessly induces nostalgia while simultaneously inventing a “new-Americana” sound that’s all their own. You might get hooked.

The Polyphonic Spree have released a video for their cover of the INXS classic “Don’t Change” to celebrate the announcement of their first full length album since 2014. The new album will be entitled “Afflaus.” The Polyphonic Spree take on classic songs from Daniel Johnston, Rush, Barry Manilow, The Rolling Stones, ABBA, and more. The covers project was recorded live during one evening at the band’s home studio. Frontman Tim DeLaughter had this to say, “It was inevitable that the Spree would end up doing this. “We were asked to play a covers show at The Kessler Theater in Dallas and were ready to go, but with the shutdowns starting to happen around the country, we made the last-minute call not to perform. “We had all been together for weeks rehearsing, so we decided to get the band together at our home studio and record the entire show live in one take, just to capture it. “We knew it was probably going to be the last time we saw each other for a long time, and the next day, everything started to close.” Tim said of the INXS cover, “We wanted to pay homage to one of their country’s great artists, but it’s also just an awesome song. I love its forward moving, almost gliding feel.”

Joywave released “Every Window is a Mirror,” the first single off their upcoming EP of the same name. Written and recorded during quarantine in the ‘Joycave,’ a reference to Joywave frontman Daniel Armbruster’s tricked out basement studio, the song has an instantly infectious chorus and speaks to self-reflection as we look out at others. Armbruster  of Joywave offers this insight on the song: “The imagery in the song is thinking you’re looking through a clear pane of glass, only to discover upon further inspection that you can see yourself in it, some of the room you’re in reflected in it — and it might be a little dirtier than you thought when you’re up close.”

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones unleashed a delightful showcase of their ska/punk expertise on their eleventh studio album. There is, of course, the energy from guitarist Lawrence Katz. The rhythm section: Nate Albert, Joe Gittleman, and Joe Sirois, chomping away in the pocket with the classic crispy Bosstones mix. Singer Dicky Barrett dives into verse one, sounding damn fine. The onslaught of tasty harmonies from the horn section as the chorus approaches. There are themes of 2020 floating around the writing. Dicky Barrett’s spicy, gravelly delivery gives us much to contemplate. Extremely powerful stuff. 

The Bamboos wrap up this week on NEXT. It’s almost become cliche over the past year to describe albums or songs written before COVID-19 as “prophetic” in terms of predicting the pandemic’s effect on the music industry. However, when it comes The Bamboos’ new album Hard Up it’s a cliche that rings devastatingly true. It was tough going for The Bamboos in 2020. The year was supposed to be a celebration of the Bamboos two-decade history as one of Australia’s preeminent funk and soul-fusion bands with the release Hard Up, followed by a tour of the UK and Europe. Instead the Melbourne nine-piece spent much of the year in lockdown and endured a 12-month break between gigs. “It was strangely prophetic in that way,” Bamboos band leader Lance Ferguson says. “We wrote that song [Hard Up] halfway through 2019. We certainly had no idea that it would resonate the way it did with what was to come.” The album was recorded over a week, just prior to the pandemic. In a house rather than a studio.  It’s a DIY method of working Ferguson of The Bamboos had long desired. “We turned the lounge room into the rhythm section room, the dining room was the horns section,” he says. “There were wires running everywhere and it was really good fun. “We were recording drum takes at 2am. Things that you dream of doing. It was just having a group of people all focused on a goal together. There’s a beautiful camaraderie that comes out of that. funk stalwarts The Bamboos are back at it on Hard Up, blending retro soul influences with relentless breakbeats for another all-too-danceable full-length outing.
