Hello new music lovers.

It’s week 767. It’s our review, a rewind, a remembrance of 2020 and the songs played on NEXT. It’s week 4 of 4 of our look back. This week is the last of the “old” new music. Thanks for listening. 2020 wasn’t complete rubbish. The last 4 weeks have proven that.

“When you don’t talk down to your audience, then they can grow with you.” – Prince

Welcome to NEXT. We have a simple goal: Find you a NEXT, new favorite song. #NextFavoriteSong

“Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST.”  ― Frank Zappa

THE WORLD IS A BUSY, fragmented place, especially when it comes to culture. Every week, we are inundated with options: Television, movies and music crop up just long enough to be supplanted by new options moments later. How do you catch up with the best of the year when it’s always shrinking in the shadow of the next great thing? Enter the list-makers. The curators.

Lists are inherently limiting. We only have so much time on my radio show. Even if we put together our top 155 songs this year, I still would miss out on showcasing some of the gems. And I usually leave out “famous” bands. I figure they don’t REALLY need NEXT.

In our cluttered 21st-century media landscape, curation is key. Lists push back against the noise. More than that, they’re fun, practical ways of digesting information.

This is hardly a new phenomenon. My end of year list is a bit valuable process because of amnesia—if a song comes out in the first quarter of the year, does it make a sound by December? Year-end lists ensure that it gets the chance.  There is mayhem come the year-end. So this four weeks are a good discussion for us new music lovers to have, no?,

What was your favorite song that NEXT played in 2020?

Music is Life.

It was tough before Covid 19. Now more than ever we need to support these bands. Even something as simple as buying an album, or a ticket to a show (when live music comes back or if they are hosting online events), or a tee shirt. And if you can buy directly from them. Even better. Thank you.
