Thanks for listening. NEXT has a simple goal: Find you a NEXT, new favorite song. Next is your place for new music discovery…one of these songs may be your next new favorite song. That’s why we do what we do
We start this week with Marcus King. He has built a career as a chameleon, jumping from acoustic ballads to proto-grunge noise. He tours with country artists and feels comfortable. He tours with a rock group and feels comfortable there too. Everyone loves him. We also have a Matt Pond PA ReDux with Anya Marina off a compilation of “early demos and archived tracks” from the past 20 or so years of his career.
Hazel English with a brilliant cover. This makes me smile. It’s eight years since The Stones released an original song. Packing stadiums has long been the Stones’ raison d’etre and they’re clearly aware they don’t need new songs to do that. But I’m quite happy to hear this sleazy new track. And you?
The Front Bottoms impress with the everyone finds themselves in the end reminder in song. Some just take a wee bit longer. And love what band had to say “This year has been a disaster, but we are pushing forward with positive and creative energy.” And I’m wishing you good vibes too. Billie Joe Armstrong continuing his series of covers. Hope he releases more. This is only one I could find for download. A fun distraction to Covid-19.
The Airborne Toxic Event with their first album in five years. Remember his book is coming out soon too. L7 cover Joan Jett with Joan Jett playing. So if that really a cover? I say yes and they sound brilliant together. Fiona Apple on this album is a lot of not letting men pit women against each other lyrics. She wants to remind ladies not to be kept separate from each other so men can control the message. Florence And The Machine released this home version last week to raise money for the Intensive Care Society
Jesse Malin adds the age old, coming-of-age story this week. Or as he puts it, “about going to find yourself in another place, whether it be New York City or California – having to leave home, and the obstacles that come with fighting your inner demons and things that try to knock you down, like people that pretend to be your friend and they really talk behind your back. Frank Turner with a surprise release. Frank said “hey people are missing live concerts. I know I am. So I’m going to release a live show for download only.” So happy to experience live frank turner. Even just recorded. Live music is good for your soul. And Frank is a must see live. MUST. SEE. LIVE. MUST.
Low Cut Connie off the band’s sixth album and they’ve spent three years of recording and writing it. Delanila – the Philosopher Dell with a brilliant tune. She says of it, “I wrote it from the perspective of a troll, convinced of their own superiority and envious of the online successes of someone they consider undeserving. Its title is ironic. Because everyone on the Internet has an opinion and everyone is a philosopher.”
Please support these bands…or we wouldn’t have bands like this around to support. Buy an album, or a ticket to a show, or a tee shirt, or…something from them. Thank you. Spotify playlist updates on Thursday(ish).
