Good idea? Bad idea?

KLSK (Albuquerque NM), in 1991, was switching formats. They decided to play Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” for 24 hours. The new format would be classic rock. Just in case you couldn’t figure that out.

“Stairway” plays more than 200 times.

Strange reactions. 100s of angry calls and letters. A listener called the police claiming that the DJ had suffered a heart attack. Police showed up. A few listeners thought the radio station had been taken hostage by terrorists dispatched by Zeppelin freak Saddam Hussein. It was 8 days the gulf war.

Weirdest of all? Lots of listeners didn’t move the dial. People wanted to know when they would stop playing it.

What do you think? What is the best format change you remember? Would you listen?

and let’s listen to Jimmy about the song

  • I do not recall many format changes for the better that happened in Chicago radio when I was growing up. I suppose the change at Q101 to the alternative format in ‘92?

Does talk radio count? If so, the assembly of Brandmeier, Kevin Matthews, and Steve & Garry at The Loop/AM 1000 around ‘87 would be my pick
