‘Smithsonian Rock and Roll: Live and Unseen’: Exclusive Rare Photos of Bowie, Prince, Amy Winehouse & More

Labelled as “A People’s History of Rock” will be released today, October 24. “A people’s history” because it’s crowd-sourced photos.

This Coffee table catches the moments of rock concerts that only a member of the crowd can. Smithsonian received over 4000 online submissions. Those turned into a 200-page history of rock’s past 60 years.

Head to Billboard to discover more on the project’s origins, which include shots of Prince, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The White Stripes, The Flaming Lips and more.

There are shots of Blondie, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Sly Stone, and a blood-smeared Iggy Pop (of course). More info here.

Remember live music is good for your soul. See you out at a show. And if you do see me, say hi, and i’ll buy you a beer.
