I think everyone goes through a samurai phase. Or maybe it’s just me. Or people that grew up in the 70s.
I had read good reviews about 13 Assassins so I asked Netflix to mail me a DVD and they did. Yes they still do that and yes I still get my DVDs in the mail. I have to as my two kids have seriously hindered my movie going habit. I’ve tried Red Box and like it but I’m a lazy git. I love that the mailman/women/person brings me movies in the mail. Hell anything in the mail I get besides bills and junk mail is a bonus. I think that is why I subscribe to magazines too.
Wow this review really got away from me. Sorry. If it weren’t for tangents no one would know me.
The movie is a bit of a throw back. In style, pace and it’s not a hollywood film at all. That’s a good thing. It’s a visual feast too. Oh and you’ll have to “read” the movie. I hope that’s not a non-starter for you.
It’s set at the end of Japan’s feudal era in which a group of unemployed samurai gather together to stop a very bad man from coming to power. There is, of course, no 24 hour cable news shows to impede him so the only option is to hunt him down (and his traveling army) and kill him.
Which leads us to the final scene in the “Town of Death”. It’s a massive ending but a bit repetitive.
It’s nearly a samurai classic.
