Last year Allison, of Radio Patoto, asked me to write up a top ten “almost but didn’t quite make my best of list” of songs. Now I love Allison and think she is swell so I said yes. Obviously I gathered a few good songs (click here to check out the 2010 list) as she asked me back this year. I decided to put them together as a podcast. Enjoy my Island of Misfit songs version 2011:
Deer Tick – Miss K
Holy balls this song makes me happy. Maybe I should trade this one out with the one I did pick from them.
The Airborne Toxic Event – All at Once
We voted at NEXT for our favorite all time TATE song and this one won. You would think that would be enough to be included in my end of the year list, no?
We are Augustines – Chapal Song
It’s about your love marrying someone else. Sucks but man the drums are killer. Get ready to air drum on this one.
Grouplove – Tongue Tied
(special rule bonus: if the song cracks into the general mainstream I have a hard time including it on NEXT’s end of the year list.) Thanks iPod. This was a top song of mine all year until that commercial.
PS I Love You – Facelove
We joke on at NEXT (My listeners and myself; yes all of 3 of us) that if you don’t know where a band is from guess Brooklyn or Canada and you’ll be right most of the time. Go with the latter on this one.
Ty Segall – You Make the Sun Fry
Rock and drone music. Love it. Bring the out the big bottom
Hayes Carll – Another Like You
I am a huge fan of smart lyrics and this song fits the bill. Added bonus front porch music.
Okkervil River – Wake and Be Fine
Blood Orange – Sutphin Boulevard
Ahhhh the grime-y underbelly of urban life…lyrics like the Stones singing about NYC in the 70s.
Mat Kearney – Hey Mama
Big fan of handclaps (and whistling songs) but this goes back to the mainstream rule. Great song. Play this one next summer at your backyard BBQ
The Belle Brigade – Losers
Have you figured it out? I’m a huge lyric guy. Does it get better than this one? Life lesson in 4 minutes and 2 seconds.
The Shake – Debutante
Great band out of Brooklyn not Canada
Trampled by Turtles – Where is my mind
Every week I include a cover song but not on my end of the year lists (yes another rule) (I am nothing if not a silly man.) Anyway this might be my cover of the year.
Amy Adams & Miss Piggy – Me Party
Jason Segel & Walter – Man or Muppet
I’m including two songs. Duh it’s the Muppets man. No brainer.
Two bonus tracks. I’m a giver.
Pearl Jam – Ole
And the song that should be played at any and all bachelor parties
Deer Tick – Let’s All Go to the Bar
Man these guys remind me so much or The ‘Mats. Love it.
